Our son was born with 7 rare diseases and has over 20 diagnoses. One of them is being born without an immune system. We tried the public school route but even on plasma infusions 3 times a week he was still missing 100 out of the 180 school days for sickness and hospitalizations. Finally during the measles outbreak 3 years ago we pulled him out and began our homeschool journey. I was technically homeschooling anyways, and being a teacher by profession, this was an easy adjustment for us.
Homeschooling allows us the freedom to school in between hospitalizations and frequent weekly trips to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. It also provides a quality of life for our son. If he was still in public school amongst all the germs, he would not be alive today.
